Blood Wedding
Edge Hill University Second Year Drama Students present a season of plays by Federico Garcia Lorca
The Theatre is a school of tears and laughter – Lorca
The greatest Spanish playwright of the twentieth century was murdered 80 years ago by fascists in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. In these plays, his three great masterpieces, love and loss, longing and duende, the spirit of the earth, fuse in passionate dances of life and death.
Blood Wedding
in a version by Ted Hughes
An atmospheric re-working by the great Pennine poet of Lorca's evocative meditation on fate, war, tradition, passion and repression. Lorca was inspired by the true story of a fatal feud between two families in Almeria province; Ted Hughes's version stays close in spirit and letter to the original Spanish. With marvellous directness, he fuses Lorca's vision to his own, and the result is a powerful poetic text which captures all the violence and pathos of the play for an English-speaking audience.
