Grayshott Folk Club Presents

Saturday 21st September 2019 at 7:30pm

Grayshott Folk Club presents:
The Leisure Society + Benedict Benjamin

Could this be Grayshott Folk Club's finest hour?

Tonight we welcome one of my very favourite Indie Folk/Pop/Rock bands to Grayshott Village Hall. The Leisure Society combine melodic, infectious tunes with intelligent, inventive lyrics. They are a great live band too and eleven years and five albums since they started out in 2008, they sound as fresh and exciting as ever.

Their first single "Last Of The Melting Snow" set the bar high-it won Nick Hemming a nomination for an Ivor Novello Award in 2009. Their first album "The Sleeper" followed, and incredibly another track on that same album ("Save It For Someone Who Cares"), also won a nomination for an Ivor Novello Award.

The quality of their song writing and musicianship has remained just as high for the past 10 years and now their latest album "Arrivals and Departures" (released May 2019), has hit the mark again:
"...one of the best such albums that you're likely to hear this year is by the English group The Leisure Society...Arrivals & Departures is an absorbing work" John Meagher-Independent, Ireland (20/04/19)

Take the best elements of The Feeling, Divine Comedy and Belle & Sebastian then re-arrange them and you have The Leisure Society. You'll love them!

What a way to kick off our new season!

+ Benedict Benjamin
Ben is first and foremost a songwriter versed in the classical traditions of the form, capable of crafting both operatic crescendo and lullaby-like stillness shot through with the heartbreaking swoon of Roy Orbison, the soothing harmonies of the Everly Brothers and the honesty of Jeff Tweedy. His songs undercut the dreamlike beauty of early 60s pop music with lyrics both frank and poetic, creating a powerful Lynchian duality that makes the heart swell and the head spin.

Even before you get to the music there’s plenty to pique one’s interest with The Leisure Society. Main-man Nick Hemming began his career in shoegaze band The Telescopes and shared a further outfit with Paddy Considine and Shane Meadows. They’ve had two consecutive Ivor Novellonominations for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, and have enjoyed the endorsement of everyone from Guy Garvey to Brian Eno. They’ve collaborated with Ray Davies and the Heritage Orchestra, not to mention soundtracking a few films, most notably Mr Considine’s brutal masterpiece Tyrannosaur. “Gorgeously delicate” - The Guardian “A true gem” - Brian Eno "Warm, colourful, literate songs that reach into the heart and the head” - The Independent “As close to any of The Beatles’ greatest records as anything I’ve heard in the last five years or so” - Drowned In Sound
