Marja-Leena Sillanpää (born in Finland, based in Stockholm), will summon sounds from the ether, in a powerful and moving electrical/electronic performance, making present the atmosphere as sound source. Sillanpää works in many media, always attentive to place and to the place of the human.
Mariam Rezaei is a musican and sound making us hear beyond the ether and into space. She is also director of experimental studio venue The Old Police House, in Gateshead, and is a lecturer in music technology at Newcastle University.
This event explores the hidden sounds of the ether, the unexpected vibrations of our surroundings and the unbodied voices that shape the spaces through which we walk.
There will also be a discussion between Sillanpää, Rezaei and Paul Hegarty on the ways in which artists, mystics and scientists have tried to experimentally tune into the sounds of the air, the sounds of the past and even the future.
