A programme of
Joyeuse Marche - Chabrier
The Water Goblin - Dvorak
Enigma Variations - Elgar
Conductor - Chris George
Nottingham Youth Orchestra’s concert features Elgar’s Enigma Variations, one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire. The piece was dedicated "to my friends pictured within", each characterisation intending to represent the mood of the person themselves. The enigma alluded to was never publicly disclosed and has been the subject of endless speculation over the years.
Chabrier’s Joyeuse Marche, a syncopated march full of verve, delightful humour and bold and colourful innovations, contrasts with the darker theme of Dvorak’s tone poem, The Water Goblin. Dvorak’s piece is based on Czech folklore and recounts a story of obsessive love and supernatural beings, which has a gruesome ending. We are pleased to welcome Chris George as our guest conductor. Chris was leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and now teaches and conducts. He has recently been coaching the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and teaches violin at the Royal Conservatoire
