The Observatory explores humankind’s relationship with space – and our gradual attempts to understand and explore it with the poetic, the scientific and the musical. Weightlessness, distance, the unknown, infinity and astronomical geometry inspire this brand new work.
Composers Jonathan Baker, Orlando Gough and Karen Wimhurst will set texts that range from the amazing metaphysics of George Herbert to unbroadcast bulletins about Apollo 11, in a piece written for 150 choreographed voices and an ensemble of exceptional instrumentalists including percussionist Stephen Hiscock and pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole.
The Voice Project’s Souvenir at Holkham Hall was one of the highlights of the Festival in 2014. The company has a growing reputation for creating beautiful site-responsive choral works set in and around familiar buildings and landscapes, inspiring audiences and performers to navigate these spaces differently. For The Observatory the open spaces, qualities of light and architectural lines of The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts will shape and inspire the performance.
