The timeless story of the love-lorn jester who foolishly allows his maid to marry a condemned man in order to inherit a fortune. Having become a bride and expecting to become a widow within the hour the maid is horrified to learn that her new husband has escaped and she is left married yet penniless.

There is, however, a happy ending for husband and wife, not so for the jester.

This, the tenth opera in the G&S canon contains some of Sullivan’s finest music and allowed Gilbert to create totally believable characters populating the Tower of London in the 16th Century.
