Hearing History: A Journey through Sound Recording Technologies

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and Newcastle University's Institute for Social Renewal in partnership with Lathe Revival invite you to experience past sound recording methods at Discovery Museum.

The workshop will give you the opportunity to learn about the history of sound recording, and experience, use and test technologies from the past, including:

- An 1887 Type 2 “Standard” Edison wax cylinder phonograph
- A 1938 Presto lathe
- A 1968 reel to reel recorder made by the British Ferrograph Recorder Company from South Shields.

Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to bring musical instruments or readings to record; the technologies work best with acoustic style music.

Places are limited for these workshops and will be on a first come, first served basis.
