Conservation Experience Day

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes here at the Laing Art Gallery? Ever wanted to get even closer to some of our paintings?

This conservation experience day aims to demystify the care and treatment of our beautiful painting collections.

The day will start with a short tour around the gallery and the conservation studio where the Laing's paintings Conservator will show and discuss the various techniques and structures that go to make up a painting as well as demonstrating some of the treatments carried out on them.

She will also talk about best practices in displaying, storing and packing works of art. You will get a chance to test your skills at the techniques of painting restoration and you can take home an information pack on the care of paintings.

10am: Introduction
10.15am: Tour of the Gallery
11am: Tour of conservation store and explanation of conservation treatments
11.30am: Tea break
12.00pm: Discussion about how to pack and display paintings with a demonstration
12.30pm: Exercise in retouching painting losses
