The Crucible
Arthur Miller's dramatic and powerful play. Set in 1692, the real events of the Salem Witch Trials are woven into this evocative story of passion, jealousy, betrayal and hysteria.
When the play was first produced in 1953 it was seen as a political allegory to the McCarthy 'witch hunt' against communist sympathisers in the USA. Sixty years on it still resonates with contemporary issues of fear, paranoia and obsessive relationships.
Now a popular set text in schools, the story and characters are still as intriguing and memorable to audiences of every age.
