Programme:
Purcell - Chacony in G minor
Warlock - Capriol Suite
Goss - Theorbo Concerto (UK Premiere)
Geminiani - Concerto Grosso La Follia (after Corelli)
Mendelssohn - String Symphony No 11
Grieg - Holmberg Suite
Ancient styles with bold modern flavours: meetings between the old and the new thread through this stimulating concert directed by SCO Leader Benjamin Marquise Gilmore.
Peter Warlock makes a modern twist on 16th-century dance tunes in his charming Capriol Suite, while Grieg combines the Baroque invention of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti with a distinctive Nordic folk twang in his buoyant Holberg Suite. The ancient theorbo is in the spotlight for British composer Stephen Goss’ new Concerto, performed by the spectacular Matthew Wadsworth – and even Geminiani gets in on the act by taking his teacher Corelli’s already virtuosic Concerto Grosso and making it even more ingenious and brilliant.
