Haydn‘s op.20 quartets are often considered the first great works in the genre. Schumann wrote all three of his string quartets in his magical chamber music year of 1842, along with his piano quintet. Brahms‘s expansive Piano Quartet in A major is an early jewel from the young lion and Schumann protégé.
