Royal Naval Hospital Haslar - Archaeology Of An 18th Century Burial Ground

Charlotte is a PhD candidate at the Cranfield Forensic Institute based at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. Her research focuses on burial archaeology and anthropology. Charlotte’s key area of research is Haslar Naval Hospital, Gosport whose burial grounds contains circa 20,000 inhumations.

Haslar Royal Naval Hospital first opened its doors to patients in 1753 treating the sick and wounded of the Georgian Navy. The first hospital of its kind in Britain, Haslar revolutionised how the Navy treated its injured seamen.

Despite the new approach to healthcare, fatalities were inevitable and the business of burying the hospitals dead had to be attended to.
