At the turn of the 19th century, two poets set out across Germany to collect folklore, literature, fairy-tales, and poetry of the people. Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano went on to publish their collection as Des Knaben Wunderhorn: Alte deutsche Lieder (‘The Boy’s Magic Horn: Old German Songs’), texts that shaped a national Germanic identity and inspired many great composers of the Lied.

In a masterclass led by the RNCM’s distinguished tutor in Lieder, Thomas Schulze, students from the School of Vocal Studies will explore Des Knaben Wunderhorn in songs by Mendelssohn, Mahler and Strauss.
