The Pietà
Olivier Award nominated actor Frances Barber brings to life the role of a woman devastated by the loss of her son to street crime in Shane Cullinan’s critically-acclaimed orchestral drama. The Pietà portrays a mother’s raw emotions through her own words; the piece is inspired by Michelangelo’s statue of the moment when Christ’s body was placed in his mother’s arms but relocates it to a modern-day Manchester. Cullinan’s dramatic orchestral score and bold narrative are woven together to produce an electric piece of music and theatre. Barber is joined by award-winning soprano Claire O’Brien and celebrated cor anglaisist Jessica Mogridge, collectively portraying the response of the mother, and are accompanied by The Stamford Orchestra
