Irish Blood, English Heart?
Irish Mancunian presents this special two-part event which will explore the role played by Irish-descent musicians in rock music in Britain.
Part 1 will feature screenings of two films from the acclaimed Irish TV documentary series "GUTH", focussing on The Smiths and Oasis respectively. All the members of both bands were Manchester-born of Irish parentage. The films explore the artists' backgrounds, music and their Irish-English identity.
In Part 2 Dr Sean Campbell (author of the book "Irish Blood, English Heart") will explore the role of Irish ethnicity in the lives and work of Irish-descent musicians, focusing on three high-profile acts: Shane MacGowan/The Pogues, Kevin Rowland/Dexys Midnight Runners, and Morrissey/Marr/The Smiths.
The talk will draw on extensive archival research as well as original interviews with key figures, including Rowland, MacGowan and Marr. Sean Campbell was an advisor and contributor to the GUTH films.
Please note the films are partially narrated in the Irish language; subtitles are provided.
