Conference: Holocaust Memory And Memorials
The Centre for Jewish Studies and the Department of History, University of Manchester and IWM North present a one-day conference, Holocaust Memory and Memorials
This conference will explore the varied and diverging memories of the Holocaust since 1945. Four speakers – three academics and a museum practitioner – will address the ways in which mass murder, resistance and dislocation have been memorialised at different places and in different ways.
The day starts with a new film about Haviva Reick, the British-trained resister parachuted into Slovakia and murdered by the Nazis in 1944, and goes onto examine how the destruction of the Jews has been memorialised at different sites in Europe. There is also consideration of the UK-based story of the Kindertransport and who ‘owns’ that story.
Conference speakers: Tim Cole (University of Bristol), Adriana Bencic (Jasenovac Memorial) Rose Holmes, (University of Sussex) and Anna Hajkova (University of Warwick).
