Few living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James MacMillan, and performances of his new Stabat Mater will be eagerly anticipated after its London premiere on 15 October. Commissioned by the Genesis Foundation for Associate Artists, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, the work is placed alongside Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia, a haunting evocation of a lost age, and the psalm-setting by Tallis upon which it is based. For searing emotion and spiritual intensity, this is an occasion not to be missed.
