Haydn's C major quartet has one of his most extraordinary slow movements inspired by melismatic, improvised gypsy violin writing. Webern's extremely affecting short pieces compress the emotions of a symphony into a few minutes whilst Mozart's K.575 has a melodious and expansive warmth and relaxation which is balm to the spirit. The Brahms is full of a wistful and heartfelt beauty perhaps inspired by Schubert.
