Israel in Egypt was Handel’s first oratorio to set words from the Scriptures, predating Messiah by three years. It is also one of his most intensely dramatic, with mighty choruses conjuring the plagues, miracles and jubilation of the Exodus story with vivid and sometimes raucous aplomb. What better work for the receptive open spaces of Westminster Abbey!
