Sacred Spaces: Synagogue, Church and Mosque

SHORT COURSE: Discover the powerful expression of the Abrahamic faiths – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – through architecture and art.

Religious identity and difference, tradition and innovation, conflict and pragmatism are themes explored as the material culture of the synagogue, church and mosque from 1000 BCE to the present day is uncovered. Following overview sessions to introduce the faiths and their places of worship, a series of detailed case studies will consider sacred
architecture of different periods and styles from across the globe. Drawing extensively on the V&A’s renowned
collections, the course will take a particular interest in those moments when religious traditions ‘borrow’ visual motifs from each other, and the symbolic integration or domination this points towards. Topics will include Centres of Power to The Sacred Space Now and will include visits to London’s oldest synagogue and Christopher Wren’s finest church.

Mondays, 13 May – 8 July 2013 (Half term: 27 May 2013), 2:00pm - 4:30pm.
