Renaissance to Restoration London
SHORT COURSE: Explore London during a dynamic and colourful period, when the city was expanding rapidly and becoming a leading centre of trade with the rest of the world.
Consider the impact of the Reformation and the Dissolution of the monasteries on London’s churches and the fabric of the city. Examine the royal palaces in the capital, such as Somerset House and Whitehall Palace, and look at the paintings and portraits produced for the royal family and private patrons. Look at how and where Londoners lived, from great houses such as The Charterhouse to ordinary terrace houses. Look at how they furnished their houses, the goods they used, and the theatre and entertainments they enjoyed. Discover the perils of London life: the terrors of the plague, and the Fire of London in 1666, and look at how the citizens of London were commemorated after death.
Tuesdays, 15 January – 26 March 2013 (Half term: 19 February), 10:30am - 1:00pm.
