Beginning with miniatures by Isaac Oliver and Richard Hilliard, and including portraits by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, the Bloomsbury Group, and Freud, landscapes by Constable, Turner, Cotman, and Sutherland, and narrative works by Hogarth, Blake, and the Pre-Raphaelites, the course will examine works by the foremost artists of the Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Modern periods. It will also consider the contribution of more popular arts like prints and illustration and the impact of major events like the Reformation, the influence of foreign art, the rise of middle class patronage and the industrial revolution and the invention of photography.
