Shakespeare, Prospero And The Audience
The contrast between Prospero and other magic using characters in Early Modern Theatre is palpable: more powerful than the pathetic Fitzdotterel, less malevolent than Scottish Play’s three witches and better fated than Marlowe’s Faust.
In this lecture Jon Kaneko-James will talk about the magic of the educated: magical books, spirit summoning, and scholar magicians. He will also talk about the real relationship between aristocrats and magic, and the fate of the intermediaries who assisted them in their hunt for esoteric assistance.
