250 Years Of Heer - A Musical Evening Of Love, Passion And Politics
This year marks the 250th anniversary of Punjabi poet Waris Shah's best-known work 'Heer'.
Encompassing over 600 verses and a multitude of characters and storylines, the sprawling epic has been lauded for its beauty, mastery and enduring wisdom over the centuries.
As such, it has commanded an almost spriritual presence in the Punjab and the wider Subcontinent and diaspora, and been celebrated in several forms by artists of all stripes.
On 7 September 2016, the Insaan Culture Club will host an evening of music and poetry on love, passion and politics from South Asia with Madan Gopal Singh, an internationally renowned Sufi artist from India, widely recognised for his luminous compositions of Shah Hussain, Rumi, Bulleh Shah, Sultan Bahu and contemporary poets.
Madan and his ensemble 'Chaar Yaar/Faqiri Quartet' will pay homage to 'Heer' through songs and stories. The night will begin with an openining set by 'Side Partition' - an upcoming 7-piece band specialising in Indian subcontinental music - with their take on modern South Asian love and politics.
Come join the Insaan Culture Club for an uforgettable night exploring love in all its manifestations and celebrating one of South Asia's best-loved female protagonists, Heer, in all her beauty, courage and defiance.
Drinks will be available at the bar, along with light snacks and a few surprises that they have in store for the night!
