Justice Not Revenge

The question of the law, what it can and cannot do, whether it can halt tyranny and redeem injustice has never felt more relevant than today, especially at a sombre time in world politics, which many anxiously see as resonant of the 1930s and after.

In this context, the renowned political thinker Mahmoud Mamdani's turn to Nuremburg and South Africa to ask what light they cast on the role of law in relation to politics could not be more urgent and timely.

In his lecture, Mamdani will reflect more broadly on the question of justice in the
postcolonial period, looking at the writings of Aime Cesaire on Haiti and Nelson Mandela in
southern Africa.
