Larrakitj - Aboriginal Memorial Poles By Wukun Wanambi

In 2013 Wukun Wunambi (b.1962) was one of five contemporary Aboriginal Australian artists invited to the British Museum as part of the research project that has also informed the forthcoming BP exhibition Indigenous Australia: enduring civilisation.

During his visit to the British Museum, Wukan saw the Reading Room standing like a memorial pole in the centre of the Museum, and the visitors swirling around searching for meaning. To explore this vision, Wukan has created a series of 6 memorial poles, or larrakitj. These hollow logs painted with traditional designs convey some of the core understandings of his clanspeople.

Held in Room 3.
