Formed in 1988, Varathron are one of the oldest Greek black metal bands in existence. Torch-holders for the distinct, Greek sound of black metal, their early works saw them weaving these frequencies practically in a void of similar sounds and perspectives.

By the time their legendary split with Necromantia came out in 1992 Varathron had fully developed their dump, rotten oscillations. Their albums, starting from 1993’s classic His Majesty At The Swamp present different takes on this sound, always invoking majestic pictures and generating feelings of turmoil.

Headed by Stefan Necroabyssious since their very inception, Varathron’s ever-changing line-up had always included members from legendary bands of the Greek sound- Rotting Christ, Horrified, Zemial…

Their current incarnation sees Stefan Necroabyssius surrounded by members of the Greek metal underground. With their latest two masterpieces (2012’s Stygian Forces of Scorn; 2014’s Untrodden Corridors of Hades), members of No Hand Path, Aenaon, Luna Obscura take Varathron’s trademark epic, mid-paced riffs to new levels and on the road for all to experience live.

See them in London on 2 May, after a day’s rest from the Walpurgisnacht.
