Makers Of Meaning

A bi monthly film night for anyone who wants to watch more funny, insightful, surprising cinema directed by women.

Sweeping from 1896 - 1992*, short works will screen between full features from film makers at the top of their game. Plus, factually inaccurate comedy sets inspired by each night's director and the life they lived off lens, invented fresh for the night by the cream of the alternative comedy scene.

This month it's the film that directly inspired Lena Dunham's Girls - (Dunham asked Weill to direct an episode of her series; the influence of Weill's style is almost uncomfortably clear). It's pretty widely accepted that if Weill had kept making movies, she'd be the film maker WoodyAllen wished he could (put his ego aside to) emulate.

* Their bimonthly programme will run from the 1896 release of the first narrative film in history, by the first female filmmaker, Frenchwoman Alice Guy-Blache, to the year their screening license allows, 1992 (thank goodness; there's far too much fantastic film to choose from as it is!).
