The London Medical Orchestra presents a programme of quintessentially British music for its summer concert. There are many threads running through the evening’s repertoire. Most obviously, the programme presents English folk tunes in glorious settings, although another feature of the programme is that it shows ‘composers at work’.
Taking folk songs and sea shanties as their starting points, Vaughan Williams Five Variants of ‘Dives and Lazarus’ and Holst’s A Moorside Suite set off a rarely-performed orchestral arrangement of the six folk songs in Grainger’s magnificent suite, the Lincolnshire Posy.
The concert includes the world premiere of Martin Humphries’ Tilikum, which tells the story of the eponymous killer whale, which was written especially for the London Medical Orchestra as part of Making Music’s nationwide Adopt a Composer Scheme; this work will be recorded by BBC Radio 3. The evening concludes with Benjamin Britten’s remarkable variations on a theme by Henry Purcell in The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.
