River Thames And The Boat Race

As the main artery for London and a key feature of Barnes’ geography the River Thames is celebrated in much music and poetry. Distinguished British composer Stephen Dodgson is best known for his guitar works and enjoyed a daily walk by the river and this affinity is strongly felt in Watersmeet. Craig Ogden makes a welcome return to the Festival and is joined by stellar tenor James Gilchrist to perform London Lyrics.

The Boat Race paints a picture in music of the excitement of the annual race between Oxford and Cambridge from the course and race itself to the spectators on the river banks. Local school children have been working hard to create their own version through improvisation on instruments and in song. BBC sports journalist Eleanor Oldroyd is our commentator and the audience will have to decide whether they are for the Light or Dark Blues!
