Fauré Requiem and Tavener Invocations (London premiere).
These two pieces, separated by a century, share a common theme of calm, meditative spirituality.
Scored for four choirs, Invocations and Last Word by John Tavener was commissioned for a Choral Festival in Canada in 2005 and Brighton Festival Chorus gave its UK premiere earlier this summer. It utilises massive choral forces positioned in all four corners of the building to create an overwhelming ‘surround sound’. Tavener’s reputation as one of the most
accessible composers of his generation is shown in this moving piece.
With Fauré’s tender Requiem (which the composer called ‘as gentle as I am myself’) the concert also includes his sublime Cantique de Jean Racine and an exquisite work by Coulais, his Caresse sur l’Ocean from the Oscar nominated lm ‘Les Choristes’.
