Country Life: Pastoral Songs and Duets from 17th-century England
From the shepherd who complains of a disappeared golden age, to his idealised counterpart in Milton's Comus, to the innocent swain tortured by his heartless Lucinda, shepherds have long reflected both the bliss and the cruelty of the 'simple life' of the outdoors. In music by Dowland, William and Henry Lawes, and Purcell, Elizabeth Kenny's group celebrates the pastoral existence and tests its status as a symbol of all that was beautiful, and lost, about England.
'Refined, sparkling and intelligent.'
