Donizetti's Roberto Devereux
One of Donizetti's Tudor Queen operas.
A historical love triangle, Roberto Devereux depicts the battle between Queen Elizabeth I, Robert Devereux - Earl of Essex, and Sara the Duchess of Nottingham. While Sara's husband is plotting the death of Essex, there is a great web of struggle between the main characters, ending with a tremendous mad scene for Elizabeth before Essex's offstage execution.
