Family Gamelan Taster Session
Learn to play the gamelan, an ensemble of percussion instruments from Java and Bali.
Composers as varied as Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, Steve Reich and Björk have taken inspiration from the gamelan, and now you can learn to play this beautiful instrument and find out about the stories attached to it.
Regarded as one instrument played by lots of people, the gamelan generates rich, sonorous and mesmerising sounds.
Playing the gamelan is a rewarding musical and social experience, improving coordination, sharpening listening skills and encouraging co-operative interaction.
No previous musical experience is necessary, just a willingness to sit on the floor, take off your shoes and have fun (chairs can be provided for those less comfortable on the floor).
For more information about our gamelan, please see www.southbankcentre.co.uk/gamelan
