Workshop - Tuning into Assertiveness

Making a good living in the music industry, whether you are a performer, composer or songwriter, is a competitive business and difficult to maintain even if you are at the absolute top of your game. As you may know from experience, the skills you need to succeed in music and maintain a profitable career are wide-ranging and exceed those that attracted you to it in the first place; on the whole, you need to call on more than your musical talent.

BASCA and The MU are aware that many work environments in the music industry are still largely male dominated. While this doesn't necessarily present barriers to female musicians in itself, there are challenges associated with finding yourself often in the minority

This workshop will examine techniques specifically for improving assertiveness so that you are better at getting what you want from work, including creating and maintaining healthy and productive working relationships.

This session will:

Help you understand the key attributes of assertive behaviour and how to employ these to your advantage in your working lives;
Provide ideas on how to deal with non-assertive behaviour (e.g. passivity and aggression);
Help you communicate your ideas, needs, concerns and requests more effectively;
Provide an opportunity to practise being assertive through group interaction.

There will also be a chance to share experiences from your own working lives in a supportive and confidential environment.

Panel Discussion – Opportunities for Women

In the evening we welcome a panel of speakers, discussing their unique perspectives on their experiences as a women working in the music industry and the opportunities available to women. The panel will be chaired by the BASCA's CEO, Vick Bain and we will hear from Cynthia Fleming, Leader of the BBC Concert Orchestra (2003-2014), Sylvia Addison, one of London’s foremost Orchestral Contractors, Laura Jurd, composer and trumpet player with more speakers to be confirmed.

We hope to see you there!
