Women Behind Bars - Gender Equality And The Criminal Justice System
What does a prison system that works for women look like?
A new report suggests that the number of women and girls incarcerated around the world has doubled since 2000, making up 6.9% of the global prison population, however women are far less likely than men to have committed violent crimes, and more likely to have broken the law to support their families.
We investigate the economic and human costs of imprisoning women on a mass scale, and how we can address the unique concerns women have β from backgrounds of abuse to being separated from children β in a prison system that mostly incarcerates men.
