Violet Nights: Lady Of The Mics

Hear from women in the grime scene who are pushing the genre forward at an event inspired by Angie Thomas' latest novel, On the Come Up.

In Thomas’ book, protagonist Bri wants to be the greatest rapper of all time. In a male-dominated industry, how can women like Bri get the credit they deserve? The scene has always featured female MCs, presenters and producers, and more and more women are making an impact.

Speakers include C Cane, who has built a noteworthy profile for herself via her standout talents and multilingual flows. The dedicated musician, who also plays guitar, piano, drums and bass, featured on Dizzee Rascal’s EP Don’t Gas Me, and her freestyle for Radio 1Xtra’s #GimmeGrime series was flagged by MTV as one of the best of the year.

DJ Kaylee Kay plays songs throughout the night.
