New Experimentalists: The Writers

Meet the novelists who are breathing new life into the form.

The demise of the novel has been greatly exaggerated. Now, a new generation of innovative writers are experimenting with language and voice to find new ways of delighting and challenging readers.

Paul Kingsnorth’s novel The Wake is set during the Norman invasions and told in the vernacular of the time. It was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2014. For this evening, Paul is joined by author Max Porter and graphic novelist Una.

In Max’s book Grief is the Thing with Feathers, a family's sudden loss of their mother is followed by the unlikely arrival of a feathered being named Crow, who is by turns a trickster, healer and babysitter. Meanwhile, Una’s Becoming Unbecoming is set when the author was twelve, exploring a world in which the Yorkshire Ripper is at large and male violence goes unpunished.
