Give Me Shelter - Women And Homelessness

Hear from women who have experienced homelessness and the charities which support women and men to rebuild their lives, working with the aim of one day eradicating homelessness.

When experiencing homelessness, women are much more vulnerable than men. Sometimes women are denied access to refuges when fleeing domestic violence, as well as when they arrive seeking asylum in the UK, fleeing violence, war and persecution in their home countries.

Women are also at greater risk of sexual violence on the streets and according to a report by St Mungo’s homelessness charity, over three quarters of women sleeping on the street have had their children taken away from them. There is also the day-to-day struggle of staying safe, dealing with periods, addiction, depression and other issues affecting women on the streets, which many charities are trying to tackle.
