Fangirls

A 13-year-old girl told Yve Blake that she would 'slit someone’s throat to be with the man I love’. She was talking about Harry Styles.

Award-winning theatremaker Yve Blake (Sydney) presents a selection of songs from FANGIRLS, a brand new musical inspired by interviews with hundreds of teenage fangirls. It’s a story of young women, the stories we tell them, and the ways we underestimate them – with a sound world that is best described as a ‘Beyonce Concert meets Rave meets Church'.

Researching this project has taken Yve on an adventure across the internet, devouring hundreds of hours of fan fiction, tweets, blogs and even a detailed tutorial on 'DIY Harry Styles Ugg Boots'. It’s also taken her on a journey of seeing Fangirls in a completely new light, and realising all the subtle ways that we socially sanction completely different behaviours for young men vs young women.

She’s here to tell us what she found, what a twelve year old girl taught her about womanhood, and why Fangirls are her heroes.

Between sharing treasures from her internet travels into the world of Fangirls, Yve and her ‘Mini choir’ (lead by the show’s Vocal Arranger Alice Chance) perform songs from the show. Expect glorious harmonies, soaring synths, and a sharp reminder of what it feels like to be in love at 15.

Commissioned and developed with support of: Australian Theatre for Young People and the Barbican Open Lab.
