The BBC Concert Orchestra, Laura Jurd, Daniel Herskedal, Francesco Tristano

Formerly known as the Laura Jurd Quartet, a new band awakens from the jaws of extinction. They are Dinosaur and they join the BBC Concert Orchestra tonight to give you an evening of fiery sonic experimentation and abstraction.

BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Laura Jurd has a passion for “making things up” and today’s concert opens with her new work for orchestra and Dinosaur, combining influences from both classical music and jazz. A new work by the astonishing Norwegian tuba player and composer Daniel Herskedal is also performed, who defies the conventions of his chosen instrument, both technically and sonically – a mesmerising performer, and a hugely talented composer.

At 7:45pm hear experimental pianist and composer Francesco Tristano collaborate with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Causing as much of a stir in the club scene as in classical concert halls, Tristano is a committed disregarder of limits and rigid practices in music. He draws on his understanding of the conventions that have shaped generations of classical pianists in order to step freely over, around and beyond them.
