2001: A Space Odyssey Live
As Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey turns 50 years old in 2018, Southbank Centre marks the occasion in a screening of the film with its soundtrack performed live.
Long recognised as one of the greatest works of science fiction of all time, and a landmark of 1960s cinema, Kubrick's seminal film is celebrated for its technological realism, its innovative Oscar-winning special effects and its bold use of music.
Following sell-out performances in recent years, the enormous forces of the Philharmonia Orchestra and Philharmonia Voices come together under conductor Andre de Ridder to perform the film's extraordinary soundtrack, as a live accompaniment to a screening of the film at Royal Festival Hall.
The film brought worldwide fame and recognition to both Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra and the music of Gyorgy Ligeti, and created one of cinema's most memorable musical images, as spaceships orbit planets to the strains of Johann Strauss' Blue Danube waltz.
Presented by Southbank Centre in association with the BFI (British Film Institute) and Warner Bros Pictures.
