Legacies Of Radical Black And Asian Music In Britain

This event looks back at pioneers from the African, Asian and Caribbean communities arriving in Britain post World War II and the new challenges they faced fighting the British state and popular racism.

As large new communities from Africa, Asia and the Caribbean started to arrive in Britain post the Second World War they brought with them their cultural forms of existence.

These new communities brought their flavours, colours and sounds and movements with them to this island, and faced with brutal street level and state racism and misogyny, they reacted in defending themselves on the streets physically and culturally too. This Black and Asian cultural resistance increasingly defined the cultural landscape of the entire country.

This event looks back to inform the on-going struggle of oppressed communities in facing the challenges of racist and neo-colonialist oppression that communities continue to face and how culture and music informs that struggle.
