A collaboration with Boiler Room and EFG London Jazz Festival connects the dots between club culture and contemporary jazz.
The mercurial talent of Theon Cross is brought into sharp focus, performing on the night with a full live band. A key member of UK jazz renegades Sons of Kemet, Cross brings a distinctive, swaggering approach to playing the tuba.
His high-energy style prismically reflects London’s vast musical underground, brushing on grime, dub, soca, and other sounds from the Afro-Carribean diaspora.
Joining Cross on the night are two highly acclaimed DJs with jazz running through their veins. The legendary DJ Spinna blesses the dancefloor with selections across the spectrum of hip-hop, disco, funk, jazz and house music.
Having cut his teeth as a producer for an array of that era’s lyrical giants, including Eminem, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and De La Soul, Spinna went on to revive and revise jazz and joul marvels like Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau.
Setting levels on the night is Donna Leake, one of London’s most acclaimed selectors thanks to her long-running stint as a Brilliant Corners resident and a must-listen monthly show on NTS.
In partnership with Boiler Room and EFG London Jazz Festival.
