I'm Just Here To Buy Soy Sauce

It is estimated that by 2025 China will have invested £105 billion+ in British infrastructure, energy, transport but primarily in property. So are the Chinese solely to blame for the UK housing crisis?

Jingan Young’s 'I’m Just Here to Buy Soy Sauce' follows two couples – a pair of cut-throat real estate agents vying for the spotlight as they attempt to sell their latest million-pound property to a Chinese tycoon and a young couple, whose attempt to buy their first home together has left them picking up the pieces of their relationship.

After premiering during the Camden People’s Theatre 'Whose London is it Anyway' festival in January 2016 (with support from China Exchange’s Cultivate Programme) the play will now, co-produced by Papergang Theatre and in association with 1989 Productions and Untold Theatre, take the debate ultra-local, exploring the housing crisis through theatre, debate, and giving platform to a diverse range of voices.

With the housing crisis reaching breaking point, this project aims to ensure that the conversation is heard from both sides, reclaiming the debate about the state of housing in our capital.

The play has since been selected to take part in New Diorama’s BAMER Project and the Arcola Theatre’s LAB.

Pokfulam Road Productions is dedicated to nurturing young writers, producers, directors, and actors to collaborate and create not only challenging works but ones that portray the way we live now.

Papergang Theatre mission is to create theatre work that reflects the multi-cultural society we live in, bringing contemporary voices from our community into the mainstream.
