Benjamin Grosvenor and the Doric Quartet complete their pocket-sized Chopin concerto cycle, and join forces in Brahms’s mighty F minor Piano Quintet.
Brahms wrestled for years with his Piano Quintet, and the work that resulted is practically a miniature symphony. It’ll make a revealing companion piece to Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto – performed here in a delightful 19th-century chamber version for piano and string quartet.
Chopin was still in his teens when he wrote it, but he seems to have been in love. Certainly, this chamber version gives it a unique intimacy – and places the chamber music-loving Grosvenor first amongst equals. This young British pianist understands that small ensembles can generate big emotions – and these five artists, together, have a way of making even familiar music sound freshly minted.
