BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Shakespeare 400
For Shakespeare on his 400th anniversary, a programme of settings of his words down the ages, given by one of Britain’s leading singers.
From Arne in the 18th century to Tippett in the 20th via Schubert and Vaughan Williams, song composers have responded vividly to Shakespeare’s own lyrical genius. Hear them in all their variety and poetry in this meticulously made recital.
In the third concert in a four-part series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary, tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook explore how Shakespeare’s words have brought out the best in the likes of Arne, Haydn, Schubert, Wolf, Vaughan Williams, Quilter, Warlock, Tippett and Dring.
James Gilchrist
