The Brodsky Quartet At 40: Angels And Maidens

A programme of works comprising:

Schubert: String Quartet No 14 in D minor D810 (Death and the Maiden)
George Crumb: Black Angels (1970)

Composed for amplified string quartet, George Crumb's Black Angels is considered by many to represent the musical pinnacle of the avant-garde period. It is a haunting exploration of religious strife: 'the devil's music’ is represented by the violin; and the cello represents 'the voice of God'.

The piece uses unusual performance techniques – shouting, chanting, whistling, whispering, gongs, maracas, and crystal glasses - to evoke the swamps of Vietnam which inspired it. Black Angels was composed in 1970, two years before the Brodskys' were formed and five years before the end of the Vietnam War. It includes several allusions to tonal music, including a quotation from the work that opens the programme, Schubert's Death and the Maiden.
