Spinning Threads
Take part in the creation of a mass installation hanging from the exterior walls of the Royal Borough’s civic nerve centre. Take a trip to Kensington Town Hall to witness the main installation performance on Midsummer day, or drop by during regular opening hours to contribute your own threads to the tapestry.
Denise Bryan writes: “As a regular visitor to Morocco, I have been fascinated by seeing thread being spun along the alleyways of the medinas. An artisan will often spin thread using old fashioned wooden spindles, their movements almost like a dance. The walls of medinas are punctuated by hooks swathed in thread ends.”
Performers will spin and weave around one another to create a sculptural web of threads, creating something that is in part dance and in part a temporary sculpture. Spinning Threads makes reference to both North African spinning techniques and traditional May Day celebrations that take place here in the UK.
