AfroCubism Revisited : Bassekou Kouyate, Seckou Keita, Yelfris Valdés, Piki Bosch , Hammadi Valdés
Although separated by an ocean, centuries of shared cultural heritage connect Cuba and West Africa, and the same irrepressible rhythms are crucial to the music of both.
Hence AfroCubism, an album recorded in 2010 (although originally planned – and thwarted, by visa problems – back in the 1990s) by a loose-knit collection of Malian musicians who travelled to Cuba. This new project, AfroCubism Revisited, revisits both some of the music of the album itself and the rich historical vein of exchange and collaboration in the music lives of Cuba and West Africa.
This event takes place at Islington Assembly Hall, which has achieved Bronze Status for disabled access from Attitude Is Everything.
Bassekou Kouyate is a master of the ngoni, a lute-like instrument from West Africa. The Guardian describes him as an 'African answer to Hendrix'.
Bassekou Kouyate tour dates
A potent cocktail of spiritual Afro-Mandinka music with a twist of jazz composed by a Sekou Keita, a griot and international Kora player with a fantastic musical family pedigree.
Respecting a musical tradition that stretches back to the 13th Century and the Mandinka Empire of West Africa, Seckou is an established contemporary master of the Kora, the 21-stringed African harp. With his feet firmly rooted in the 21st century and the identity of his heritage clear, Seckou is keen to experiment and develop fresh ideas.
'... an inspired exponent of the Kora' (The Guardian).
